Tbilisi After Dark

Cambridge Junction, 18 Jul 2026

Presented by Chela & Buska, the Cambridge Georgian Choirs and The Georgian Legend

Highlighted in the latest series of “Race Across the World”, Tbilisi is the vibrant capital city of Georgia, a cultural melting pot where ancient polyphonic singing collides with exciting modern dance choreography. The Georgian Legend Dance Studio team up with Chela and Buska, the Cambridge Georgian Choirs, to give a matinee performance full of infectious moves and soaring harmonies.

Prepare to be transported to the heart of the Caucasus, where East meets West… not just to the back streets of the big city, but to the mountains of Svaneti and the vineyards of Kakheti. You will hear of lover’s trysts, mother’s laments and village rivalries. Stomp your feet and clap along as the colourful dancers reach a rhythmic crescendo!

Chela was founded in Cambridge just over 25 years ago as a mixed voice choir dedicated to preserving the rich tradition of three-part harmony only found in Georgia. Buska emerged as a complementary male voice choir about a decade later. The repertoire of the two choirs has been regularly enriched by learning songs from visiting ethnomusicologists as well as by trips to Georgia itself.

These polyphonic songs have been passed down orally from one generation to the next for thousands of years in Georgia. They have helped to maintain a strong sense of national identity despite the myriad influences from neighbouring larger countries. First heard at a mother’s breast, the songs give full expression to all aspects of life from the cradle to the grave.

Georgian Legend Dance Studio was founded in West London in 2024, with the aim of introducing the exciting and often exotic dance forms from the Caucasus to British Audiences. Principal dancers Lika Gigineishvili and Giorgi Gogonadze previously danced with the Georgian National Ballet and Kutaisi National Ensemble respectively, and here head up a 30-strong troupe of mixed ages for their first performance in Cambridge.
