Living Composers

West Road Concert Hall, 11 Jul 2026

Tonight’s concert is to celebrate Living Composers and to raise funds for Richard’s Music Therapy. Three years ago the CCO promoted female composers. Now it is championing Living Composers.

All the pieces in tonight’s programme are by contemporary composers. Some were composed for the CCO, some were arranged specially for the CCO and others are well-known favourites. We like there to be surprises in our programmes, so we only mention in advance a few of the pieces that will be performed. Come along to hear the full repertoire!

We are pleased to be joined by special guest, Jonathan Shanklin, who will add narration to one of the pieces. We also hope to welcome other special guests, possibly living composers(!), to our audience.

Richard's Music Therapy

The charity says: Richard's Music Therapy is named after a boy who received our music therapy intervention some years ago. Just like Richard, all of the children we work with have special needs and benefit enormously from music therapy. Our vital service sits within the charity Cambridgeshire Culture Foundation, based at Cambridgeshire Music in Histon. We can only carry out our work helping children and families in Cambridgeshire thanks to the wonderful support we receive from local people and organisations like the inspiring Cambridge Concert Orchestra. More about Cambridge Concert Orchestra:

The Cambridge Concert Orchestra has been making music since 1967. We have a reputation for being one of the friendliest orchestras in Cambridge and enjoy playing a wide repertoire of music, exemplified by our programme tonight.

We are privileged to own an extensive library of sheet music. To keep up to date, we regularly purchase new music, commission new pieces by contemporary composers, and obtain music that is not commercially available directly from living composers. This means that every concert is different and there is always something for everyone. While the orchestra’s emphasis is on enjoyment, we are pleased that our concerts raise money for many different charities.

As well as performing in large venues, we really enjoy taking our music directly into the community by playing to smaller audiences in churches, community centres, village colleges etc. in and around Cambridge, as it is important to us that as many people as possible have the opportunity to hear live music.
